Advice and Encouragement for Teenagers
The advice offered here to teenagers is suitable in principle to anyone really, because despite what anyone tells you, everyone thinks and feels the same, the only difference is experience and knowledge. So dear reader, we must take the message to ourselves. Even old people can be spiritual teenagers, not just a child, but now finding our feet, but suffering setbacks, learning by experience. Every age, every stage is a difficult one, every step of life decisions have to made. Equally every stage of life we can still have fun and enjoy the benefits that have been given us. It is not helpful to brand one particular phase of life any more difficult than another. It is all perfectly normal. Older people can have a habit of looking down their noses at young people, typical teenagers, we weren’t like that in my day”… yes you were Old Man!!

Many people who claim to be Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is God Himself. They believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. They believe that the Holy Spirit literally comes into you, and that is how God can literally be in you it gives you eternal salvation come what may. They believe that the Holy Spirit moves them to make strange noises, and shouting, and be full of shaking, and that they have found Jesus. What is even more remarkable it seems, is that they can achieve all this, be a vessel of the Holy Spirit, be eternally saved, able to speak in tongues, and to truly know God, without even reading and understanding the Bible, the very book, - the only book that tells them about God in the first place. Let us examine carefully what the Bible actually teaches, rather than what people invent.

This passage in Luke’s Gospel took place at the end of Jesus’ public ministry. It had begun in the synagogue at Nazareth and Luke records the incident, “Now Jesus came to Nazareth, and in three and a half years Jesus and his twelve disciples proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom of God throughout Judaea, Galilee and east of the Jordan River from Caesarea Philippi, the Decapolis and Perea and Jerusalem. His fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with various diseases and torments, and those which were suffering with mental diseases and he healed them all. Jesus became very popular with the ordinary people who followed him in great multitudes from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and Judaea, and from beyond Jordan. (Mat 4:23-25)

In this modern world of apparent relative morality, the starting point with regards to the Word of God is one of dismissal, scepticism and doubt. There is a great contrast to the spirit of this age with those who take a different perspective, and instead seek to align themselves with what God has revealed as He shares His intellect with His children and making that the premise of their approach. The book we know as the Bible began to come into existence over 3,000 years ago. The earliest books were written by Moses for the Hebrew speaking people, known as Israelites in history. Moses may have had access to information written on clay tablets before the Flood (see Genesis 5 ‘This is the book of the generations of Adam”) which provides a genealogy from Adam to Noah and his sons. The first five books, collectively known as the Pentateuch, describe the origin of the Israelites; how they sprang from the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jacob had twelve sons and from these came the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob and his family of some 70 persons came from the land of Canaan into Egypt, as a result of a famine. In time the Egyptians considered these Israelites to be a threat to their nation and enslaved these descendants of Jacob as described in the Book of Exodus.

The history of Christianity is no better than that of the Jews. The Lord Jesus and his apostles established in their teachings very clearly the basic meaning of the Old Testament scripture. This is summarised in the New Testament phrase: “The things concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ”. The substance of these things is described as the Gospel, or good news and glad tidings. This contained specific information concerning the Kingdom of God and the identity, character and achievements of Jesus Christ; which were essential to a correct belief and faith that are absolutely necessary to the attainment of the salvation which the Bible promises.
